Description

High performance is built on the details most people overlook. SELENIUM delivers a precise 200 mcg serving of this essential trace mineral to support normal immune function, thyroid function and protection of cells from oxidative stress. Created for adults who take their nutrition seriously, this straightforward formula adds an important micronutrient to a performance-focused routine without unnecessary complexity—ideal for those who want to cover the fundamentals while maintaining a demanding lifestyle.

Selenium works by being built into selenoproteins, a family of proteins that includes the glutathione peroxidase enzymes, part of the body's own antioxidant system, and selenoprotein P, which carries selenium through the blood to where it is used. A steady daily supply supports normal selenoprotein activity and helps maintain the body's natural antioxidant defences.

MitoGenix Selenium is made for healthy adults aged 18 and over who want a simple, single-capsule daily micronutrient: people with full working weeks, regular training sessions or busy family routines who prefer one clearly declared mineral to a long list of ingredients.

Every figure is declared. The raw material concentration and the selenium it delivers are stated separately, and the formula carries no proprietary blend. Selenium also comes from everyday foods such as fish, meat, eggs, dairy and Brazil nuts, so it is worth counting those as part of your total daily intake.

The following describes published research on the ingredient. It is not a claim about this specific product.

Studies suggest the body's response to selenium depends on how much it already gets. In a 2010 randomised, placebo-controlled trial, Hurst and colleagues gave 119 healthy UK adults aged 50 to 64 selenium-enriched yeast at 50, 100 or 200 mcg a day for 12 weeks. Plasma selenium rose with dose, reaching about 177 ng/mL in the 200 mcg group, and selenoprotein P increased in every selenium group but levelled off at 50 mcg, with no further rise at 100 or 200 mcg; platelet glutathione peroxidase activity did not change significantly at any dose. Research indicates that the chemical form affects blood levels: in a 16-week US trial, Burk and colleagues (2006) gave adults with an already adequate selenium intake roughly 200, 400 or 600 mcg a day as selenomethionine, selenium yeast or sodium selenite. Selenomethionine and yeast raised plasma selenium in a dose-dependent way while selenite did not, yet neither glutathione peroxidase activity nor selenoprotein P changed with any form or dose. Thomson and colleagues (2008) found that 100 mcg a day of selenomethionine for 12 weeks raised plasma selenium by 61% in New Zealand adults, while two Brazil nuts a day, supplying an average of 53 mcg, raised it by 64%; both intakes are lower than this product's 200 mcg serving. Taken together, the evidence is mixed: blood selenium rises reliably with intake, but further gains in selenoprotein activity appear limited once intake is adequate. In 2023 the European Food Safety Authority reviewed the trial evidence and set 255 mcg a day as the adult upper level for selenium from all sources combined.

Selenium amino-acid chelate compared with selenomethionine. Selenomethionine is the amino-acid form of selenium that occurs naturally in foods, and it is the form used, on its own or in selenium yeast, in most published human trials, including those above. In an amino-acid chelate, selenium is bound to amino acids. Direct human comparisons between the two forms are limited, so both are most usefully judged on a clear declaration of elemental selenium per serving.

Selenium amino-acid chelate compared with sodium selenite. Sodium selenite is an inorganic selenium salt, widely used in multivitamins and fortified foods. Amino-acid-bound and inorganic forms are handled differently by the body: in the Burk (2006) trial, selenomethionine raised plasma selenium while selenite did not, although amino-acid chelates were not part of that study. MitoGenix Selenium uses the amino-acid-bound chelate form.

A selenium capsule compared with Brazil nuts. Brazil nuts are one of the richest food sources of selenium, but their content varies: in the Thomson (2008) trial, two nuts a day supplied anywhere from 20 to 84 mcg. A capsule declares its amount, 200 mcg per serving, which makes total daily intake easier to keep track of.

Key Benefits

  • Antioxidant defences: Selenium helps maintain the body's natural antioxidant defences as a building block of the glutathione peroxidase enzymes.
  • Normal selenoprotein activity: Supplies the selenium the body uses to make selenoproteins, including selenoprotein P, which carries selenium in the blood.
  • Chelated form: Selenium amino-acid chelate at 2% elemental selenium, providing 200 mcg per capsule (364% NRV).
  • One capsule a day: The full daily serving is a single capsule, and every jar holds 60 servings.
  • Full declaration: No proprietary blends, and independently tested for identity and purity.

Common Questions

Which form of selenium supplement should I choose?
Common forms include selenomethionine, selenium yeast, sodium selenite and amino-acid chelates. Selenomethionine is the most studied, and selenite is an inorganic salt. MitoGenix Selenium uses selenium amino-acid chelate and declares the figure that matters for comparison: 200 mcg of elemental selenium per capsule.

How much selenium should I take daily?
The suggested use for MitoGenix Selenium is one capsule daily, providing 200 mcg of selenium (364% NRV), for adult men and women alike. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and count selenium from food and any other supplements as part of your total intake.

What happens when you take selenium every day?
Your body builds selenium into selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidase, one of its own antioxidant enzymes, and selenoprotein P, which carries selenium in the blood. A daily capsule of MitoGenix Selenium keeps that supply steady and supports normal selenoprotein activity.

Is 200 mcg of selenium too much?
200 mcg is the full daily serving of MitoGenix Selenium, so take one capsule only. Selenium has a narrow range between enough and too much, and food counts too: in 2023 the European Food Safety Authority set 255 mcg a day as the adult upper level from all sources.

Can I take selenium with other vitamins and supplements?
Check the labels of anything else you take, because many multivitamins already contain selenium, often as sodium selenite. Doubling up adds to your total intake, so keep to one MitoGenix Selenium capsule daily and ask a pharmacist if you are combining several products.

How long does selenium take to work?
Selenium builds up gradually rather than overnight. In a 2010 UK trial, selenoprotein P rose within the first 6 weeks, and blood selenium at 200 mcg daily levelled off by about week 10. Take MitoGenix Selenium every day with food, consistently.

Should I take selenium on an empty stomach?
No. The label suggests taking MitoGenix Selenium with food, early in the day. Taking your capsule with breakfast turns it into an easy daily habit, and keeping to the same time each morning makes it simpler to remember.

Should I get selenium from a supplement or from food?
Fish, meat, eggs, dairy and Brazil nuts all supply selenium, but amounts vary: in one 2008 trial, two Brazil nuts a day supplied 20 to 84 mcg. MitoGenix Selenium declares 200 mcg per capsule, so keep very high-selenium foods such as Brazil nuts occasional.

How do I know which selenium supplement to buy?
Price alone says little. Check the named form of selenium, the amount of elemental selenium per serving and independent testing. MitoGenix Selenium declares selenium amino-acid chelate at 2% elemental selenium, providing 200 mcg per capsule, with no proprietary blends, independently tested for identity and purity.

What are the side effects of taking selenium daily?
At the suggested dose, selenium is generally well tolerated by healthy adults, and unwanted effects are mainly linked to taking more than recommended over time. Discontinue MitoGenix Selenium if any adverse reactions occur, and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

Is it safe to take selenium supplements during pregnancy?
MitoGenix Selenium is not intended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, or for anyone under 18. Selenium needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor or midwife, who can advise on total intake from food and any prenatal product.

Does selenium interact with medications?
If you take any prescription or over-the-counter medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before adding MitoGenix Selenium. Individuals with a known medical condition should consult a healthcare professional before using this health supplement, as the label advises.

CAUTION: Store in a cool, dry place or below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for children under 18 years, or pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
